What Android gives you out of the box
Before you install anything, Android already does more than most people use. Four features are worth knowing about, whichever messenger you end up picking.
- Archive: in Google Messages, hold a conversation and choose Archive. It stays readable in Archived; sending to it returns it to the main screen. This does not add a lock.
- Per-conversation silencing: mutes one thread so it stops lighting up your lock screen. The thread itself stays in plain view.
- Sensitive notifications: a system setting keeps message content off the lock screen, showing only that something arrived. Worth turning on today; it costs nothing.
- App pinning: locks the screen to a single app before you hand the phone over, so a borrower can't wander. Use the device’s documented unpin authentication settings. It constrains an app, not one chat, and menus vary by device.
Samsung Secure Folder, in honest detail
On a Samsung phone, Secure Folder is the serious option: a separate Knox-protected workspace with its own lock and its own copies of apps. A messenger installed inside keeps separate data and separate notifications, and you can even remove the folder's icon from the app drawer. It protects a separate workspace rather than assigning a code to each conversation.
Secure Folder's icon can be hidden, though the feature remains reachable in settings. Check its actual access and notification settings. It is a workspace-level control rather than a separate code for each chat.
Android’s native private space is another option
On supported Android 15+ devices, private space separates apps into another profile. You can choose its lock and hide its container while locked. Four questions about access and account requirements
Use four practical questions when comparing a messenger:
- Home-screen and other lists. Check what appears on opening and what remains accessible through other screens or settings.
- Unlock scope. Check whether one unlock grants access to an app, a folder or a single chat.
- Wrong-code feedback. Check whether an incorrect code opens content and what feedback it gives. Hush can show error feedback.
- Account requirements. Check whether signup needs a phone number or email, and what account recovery is available. A username still has service identifiers.
Mainstream messengers
Content confidentiality and device access are separate concerns. Encryption can complement app locks, chat locks and notification controls. Check the actual configuration; an unlocked phone does not necessarily mean every conversation can be opened.

Check the actual configuration
Android controls differ across versions and manufacturers. A folder icon may be hidden, notifications may be muted, and access boundaries may be app-wide or conversation-specific. None guarantees the absence of usage records or saved copies.
How Hush handles code-based chats on Android
Hush's home screen is a numeric keypad with no contact or conversation list on that screen. Each chat opens with its own six-digit code; leaving the chat returns you to the keypad. Requests, blocked users and security alerts can show names or badges elsewhere in the app.

- Install Hush from your app store. It is free to download, with optional in-app purchases.
- Create an account and choose a username. The current default signup needs no phone number or email.
- Connect by username or invite link. For a username request, choose your six-digit code when sending or accepting it; the other person must approve and chooses their own code. A one-tap invite link from Hush connects you without a separate approval once the person who received it has set up Hush and taps it.
- Open the chat with your code. Return to the keypad when you leave.
- Check notification controls on both phones. Select show name, hide name or mute for that contact, then check the actual notifications.
An incorrect code does not open a chat or space. The keypad can give error feedback. Security alerts can warn about several different incorrect codes tried in a short time. A single typo does not normally trigger an alert, and an alert does not prove who tried the codes.
- Hush conversations happen inside Hush. It does not hide existing SMS, iMessage or WhatsApp chats. Both people need Hush to message each other.
- Keep your codes and account access safe. There is no in-app forgotten-code recovery or master unlock. Reconnecting with a known username starts fresh and does not recover earlier history. The default account has no implemented recovery route after session loss; do not assume reinstalling or changing devices restores it.
- Hush is not end-to-end encrypted. Backend services store messages, media and access data. Code-based access is not a guarantee against server or device access.

Is Samsung Secure Folder always visible?
