Does iMessage delete for everyone or just me?
Apple's iPhone guide separates two actions: deleting, which changes only your own devices, and Undo Send, which reaches the other phone for two minutes. What each one removes, and what stays.
Only you. Deleting a message, or a whole conversation, removes it from your iPhone and your other Apple devices, not from everyone else's. The delete page says you can't delete messages, attachments or conversations for anyone else. The one route that reaches the other phone is Undo Send, within 2 minutes of sending. It works only between iMessage users on iOS 16 or later.
Does deleting an iMessage conversation delete both sides?
No: deleting a conversation, like deleting a single message, changes only your own side, and the other person's copy stays where it was. The table lists each control the guides document, where it is done, what happens to your copy, and what happens to the other person's copy.
| Control | Where it is done | Your copy | The other person's copy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete a message | Touch and hold the message bubble, tap More, select, then tap the Delete button | Goes to your Recently Deleted folder for up to 30 days | Unchanged; the guide says deleting happens "without affecting what your recipients see" |
| Delete a conversation | In the conversation list, swipe left and tap the Delete button, or touch and hold and tap Delete | The same folder for up to 30 days; with Messages in iCloud it goes from all your devices | Unchanged; you can't delete conversations for anyone else |
| Undo Send | Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send, within 2 minutes of sending | The recover page says it "is permanently deleted" | Removed from the recipient's device, with a note in both transcripts that you unsent it |
| Keep Messages | Settings, Apps, Messages, then Keep Messages below Message History | Removes conversations and attachments older than 30 days or a year, on an ongoing basis | Unchanged; deleting affects only your own devices |
| Delete messages on a Mac | Select the messages, press Delete, then click Delete in the dialogue | Moved to Recently Deleted on your device, "but not anyone else's" | Unchanged; deleting changes only your own conversations, not your recipients' |
| Delete in Google Messages | Touch and hold the conversation, then tap Delete | Permanent: "it cannot be recovered", and it leaves the device too when Google Messages is the default app | The page documents no control that reaches the other phone |
Several how-to pages add an Airplane Mode trick for pulling a message back; none of the saved guides documents it.
Can you delete an iMessage for everyone?
Only with Undo Send, and only within 2 minutes of sending. To unsend, you must be using iMessage with iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, macOS 13, visionOS 1 or later. The same goes for the person receiving it. On an earlier operating system, the original message remains in the conversation, and you're notified that the recipient may still see it. You can't edit or unsend SMS, MMS or RCS text messages, so a green bubble stays where it landed.
Touch and hold the message bubble, then tap Undo Send. A note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both transcripts, yours and the recipient's. Undo Send is offered for up to 2 minutes after sending, and not after.
Editing is the other option: you can edit a sent message up to five times within 15 minutes of sending it. The bubble updates on both your iPhone and the recipient's device, marked Edited, and both of you can tap Edited to see the previous versions.
What happens to deleted iMessages?
They sit in your Recently Deleted folder for up to 30 days, where you can recover them. After 30 days, the messages are removed from all your devices, and after 40 days they are permanently deleted from iCloud. To recover, tap the Filter button in the conversation list, tap Recently Deleted, select the conversations and tap Recover. To clear them sooner, the same Recently Deleted view has a Delete button, and the guide warns that this can't be undone.
With Messages in iCloud, deleting or recovering on your iPhone does the same on all your devices where it is turned on. Two things do not reach that folder. A message you removed with Undo Send is permanently deleted, and audio messages that expire before being saved aren't recoverable. If you'd rather the phone did this on a schedule, Keep Messages removes conversations older than 30 days or a year, attachments included.
If the aim is a thread out of sight rather than gone, see keeping texts without deleting them and the other ways to hide text messages on iPhone.
Does Google Messages let you unsend or delete for everyone?
Not on the help page for deleting conversations, which documents removal from your own side only. In Google Messages, you touch and hold each conversation you want to delete, then tap Delete. If Google Messages is your default messaging app, deleted conversations are also deleted from your device. The page is blunt about recovery: if you delete a conversation or message, it cannot be recovered, and the action is permanent.
For a single message, touch and hold it inside the conversation and tap Delete. Archive is the alternative the page offers for a thread you want out of the way but not gone. Archived conversations disappear from the Home screen, but you can still read them. Several articles describe a delete-for-everyone option arriving over RCS; the saved help page does not document it, so this post makes no claim about it. For apps built around expiry rather than deletion, see the guide to disappearing messages apps.
Where Hush fits
Hush is a separate messaging app with its own conversations. The home screen is a keypad, with no contact or conversation list. Hush conversations happen inside Hush; it does not hide your existing SMS or WhatsApp chats. Choose available message-expiry settings in the app; Plus adds longer options. How Hush works explains the keypad and the code for each chat.
- This compares what someone holding your unlocked phone can see. It does not compare confidentiality: iMessage is end-to-end encrypted; Hush is not.
- Messages expire in the conversation; server cleanup occurs later.
Common questions
Does unsend work for SMS (green bubbles)?
No: you can't edit or unsend SMS, MMS or RCS text messages. To unsend or edit, or to see when others do, you must be using iMessage with iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, macOS 13, visionOS 1 or later. If the conversation is a green bubble, deleting it clears your copy only, and the message stays with the recipient.
Can iMessages be deleted for everyone in a group conversation?
The unsend page gives the group rule for edits only. If you edit a text message in a group conversation, only iMessage users will see your edits. For unsending it states the general rule: up to 2 minutes after sending. Anyone in the group on an earlier operating system keeps the original message, and you're notified that they may still see it.
Is the other person notified when I delete a conversation?
The delete page describes deleting as something you do without affecting what your recipients see, and it mentions no notice to anyone. Undo Send is different: a note confirming that you unsent the message appears in both conversation transcripts. Editing is visible too: the message is marked as Edited in the conversation transcript.
